For the past sixty-three years, the Men Who Dare (MWD) organization has been providing financial assistance to college/trade school-bound students who have limited resources to achieve their higher education goals. It all started in 1959 when a group of men at the First Baptist Institutional Church of Hamtramck noted the difficulties of a young man, a member of the same church, matriculating at Highland Park Junior College. The young man was unable to secure financial assistance and thus unable to continue his education. To help the young man with his tuition, a group of men raised funds by selling barbeque dinners. Because of the favorable outcome, the group decided in September of 1959 to form an organization devoted to helping young people secure financial aid to further their education. The original membership consisted of thirteen courageous men. The name of the organization, "Men Who Dare" (MWD), was selected after a great deal of thought because it reflected the daringness of the undertaking at hand.
At Men Who Dare, we believe in the power of hard work, determination, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. We are committed to supporting driven individuals who are ready to take on the challenges of higher education but may lack the resources to do so.
